What interests me most about type is the fact that words and letters are shapes. We see letters, arranged properly they form words, and those words connect us to ideas, but to me, they always remain shapes, and those shapes create relationships. In arranging type I often think of the letters and words as objects or people, that through their interaction create meaning. Not just in their immediate interpretation as words and ideas, but through the ways in which the shapes themselves interact.

I have always been interested in the “title sequence,” much in the same way that I became enamored with the “logo” ever since I first noticed the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo as a child. I remember there were TV shows that I would watch solely based on the power of their intros.

logos and intros amaze me. The life blood of an entire company or entity assessed, “succinct-ified” and expressed in a distinguishing mark, much like a good title sequence tells you all you need to know about what you are about to see, it establishes character relationships as well as tone. I believe there is a certain beauty in the act of expressing the true meaning of something unfettered by excess; I enjoy that concept as both creator and observer.
