Words as Shapes
July 24th, 2009 | Journal, ThoughtsWhat interests me most about type is the fact that words and letters are shapes. We see letters, arranged properly they form words, and those words connect us to ideas, but to me, they always remain shapes, and those shapes create relationships. In arranging type I often think of the letters and words as objects or people, that through their interaction create meaning. Not just in their immediate interpretation as words and ideas, but through the ways in which the shapes themselves interact.
Logos and Intros
July 24th, 2009 | Journal, ThoughtsI have always been interested in the “title sequence,” much in the same way that I became enamored with the “logo” ever since I first noticed the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo as a child. I remember there were TV shows that I would watch solely based on the power of their intros.
logos and intros amaze me. The life blood of an entire company or entity assessed, “succinct-ified” and expressed in a distinguishing mark, much like a good title sequence tells you all you need to know about what you are about to see, it establishes character relationships as well as tone. I believe there is a certain beauty in the act of expressing the true meaning of something unfettered by excess; I enjoy that concept as both creator and observer.

Beware the Pink Pants-er
His work blankets the city with the child like whimsy of a Keith Herring, and the staunch social relevance of a young Saul Bass.
If you have been in and around the New York City area this past summer then you have undoubtedly encountered his work.
He is, what some would call a ‘guerilla artist,’ leaving his calling card, the ‘Star Exclamation Point’ where he treads.

Ship Without a Captain
July 12th, 2009 | Journal, PoetryAlone, the Pirate stands on the boardwalk
To him a plank
Congested, hustled, bustled
Heart heavy and brow beaten; he carries the weight of his heart on his shoulders
And with quite dismay
He asks for the strength to endure but instead is ushered to the Captains wheel
Waves crash at the back of his throat
Drowning the truth
For this is the price he must pay for reaching out to the hand of dust and smoke, expecting stone
The wind lifts his head in solemn ascension
Wasted time was never more well spent

Armed by the twin blades of doubt and certitude
She glides to the dance of creation
Missing every step, but staying in time
Circling walls of stone draw ever near
Hundred weight and penny pound
She is her own shield
Unwavering, and forged of tempered serenity
Fighting until the day she wins, or is won

Bad Thai
July 10th, 2009 | Journal, PoetryTalking to a man of circuitous verisimilitude
The hands of the clock close tight around my neck
A twelve course meal without flavor or substance
The appetizers, lukewarm and late
And this is only the beginning…
The Ballad of Joseph
July 10th, 2009 | Journal, PoetryWith a hand dipped in moonlight
He walks by the waters edge to catch a glimpse of himself
Of sound mind, and electric body
He steps into the shadows
The refection now more real than the man
Echoing footsteps recall sounds of the dance
Forever etched into the sand, of diamond grain
